SECE Curriculum

60 Minutes of Diverse Activities

Imagine attending your first SECE class. You arrive with your little one, set down your things, and slip off your shoes. Friendly smiles are exchanged between participants in the class. Calmly, the class forms a circle, waiting for the familiar sound of Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik to be heard and to initiate the gathering activity. Afterward, we stand to greet one another with joyful singing, handshakes, and eye contact.

We move on to a sequence of creative development activities - for listening and responding - for language development and musical timing -for instrument play and group interaction. Using nursery rhymes and favorite children's songs, we work together to develop confidence and independence, or practice accepting guidance from a teacher. We practice taking turns and waiting for a random turn. We explore large motor skills with jumping and marching and we develop fine motor skills with finger plays. We learn from parent role models as well as other children within the class. We observe. We listen. We interact. We dance.

Class concludes with the much-anticipated story time, emphasizing the value of literacy. Parents have a unique opportunity to journal the observations of their developing child, noting the small achievements and weekly progress that is evident. Over the weeks, months, and years of participation, you will find deep satisfaction in the bond that has been strengthened with your child. You will be in awe with the way your child learns, and you will know that the SECE music class was the best choice you could have made.

What the Parents Say

We love this class so much! It is an opportunity for me to bond with my daughter while exposing her to a world of music and interacting with a community of other children and adults. Megan is a masterful childhood educator who brings variety, joy, and focus to the hour that we are all together. My daughter sings the songs from class and does the movements all week long. She's become really interested in her xylophone and drum at home. We eagerly look forward to our Tuesday mornings and encourage everyone to check it out also. Thank you for this very unique enrichment, Megan.

I have been in the SECE classes for over three years with my two daughters. I have been amazed at how their verbal, emotional, and social skills have benefited due to the class. My oldest still loves to attend class and has not tired of the music and activities at all. Both girls love to see themselves growing as they "level up" to the next step in the activities when they're ready. They request the CD in the car, and can't wait for class each week.

This program helped me, as the parent, see how quickly my baby can understand beat and rhythm. My child loved each class and I now know it's never too early to get your child learning more about music!
-Heather M., Humble, TX
I really can't say enough about how much I love the SECE class! My son loves it and it helps him learn to be kind, to share, to care for others. This class really teaches the babies and toddlers - it's not a chaotic free-for-all like so many other classes. They learn to keep a beat which helps with self-regulation, fine and gross motor skills, and many more pre-music skills, but more importantly to me, they learn to be good, kind people. What more could we ever want for our young children?

I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and the arts are the keys to learning."    -Plato
